“Then I looked when the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and a huge earthquake took place; the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became blood red; and the stars in the sky fell to the earth like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a fierce wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the very important people, the generals, the rich, the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who is seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?”” (Revelation 6:12-17)
There was a great earthquake. The foundations of churches and states would be terribly shaken. Such bold figurative descriptions of great changes abound in the prophecies of Scripture; for these events are signs and declare the end of the world and the day of judgment. Dread and terror would seize on all sorts of men and women. Because on that day neither political office positions, job titles, amount on funds in bank accounts or retirement funds, assets accumulated, house square footages, or personal competency and strength, can help men or women at that time. They would be glad to be like the poor and no more stand out or be seen in the world. Though Christ holds the title of The Lamb, he can be angry, and the wrath of the Lamb is exceedingly dreadful; for if the Redeemer himself, who appeases the wrath of God, is now our accuser, where shall we find a friend to plead for us? As people live and have their days of opportunity and seasons of grace in life, so God has his day of righteous wrath. It seems that the overthrow of the paganism of the Roman empire is meant here. The idolaters are described as hiding themselves in their dens and secret caves, and vainly seeking to escape ruin. In such a day, when the signs of the times show those who believe in God’s word, that the King of kings is approaching, Christians are called to hold to their faith and to a bold confession of Christ and his truth before their neighbors, family and co-workers. Whatever they may have to endure, the persecution and attacks of people in short run is our call rather than that shame of denying our faith which is everlasting.
My family, I pray as we begin a new week in the middle of the holiday season which is one that can be of excess, indulgence and opportunity as we remember the amazing grace of God displayed in the manger in the birth of Christ, we also remember to hold true to our faith, calling, confession and living out our life all conformed to that of Christ, in Jesus name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you my friends!
